ST. LOUIS, MO. – Morgan Shepherd finally got the finish he has been looking for on October 23 as his #21 Shepherd Racing Ventures Chevrolet logged a Top 20 run at Gateway International Raceway near St. Louis.
While both cars in Shepherd’s stable have struggled in recent weeks, both the #21 and #89 entries cracked the starting field at Gateway on Saturday.
Shepherd kept the #21 running respectable all night on his way to his best finish in quite some time, an 18th. Johnny Chapman, who drove Shepherd’s #89 in his absence finished 37th in that machine.
While neither car looked dominant in the two practice sessions or qualifying on Saturday, but both were fast enough to make the 43-car field on their qualifying times, Chapman 36th and Shepherd lining up right behind him in 38th.
Both cars had ran between the 30th and 40th fastest times in two Friday practice sessions and were plenty fast under race conditions to show competitive lap times.
Shepherd, sporting an ESPN in-car camera for the first time in many years, moved his #21 entry back up to 20th place in the owner’s standings while the #89 entry remains 38th in owner’s points.
