FONTANA, CA. - Morgan Shepherd will drive a second Davis Motorsports entry in Saturday’s Busch Series race at California Speedway, Faith Motorsports announced February 22.
The Busch field at Fontana only included 41 potential entries as of Wednesday evening, so Davis Motorsports decided to enter a companion car to the team’s #0 Hefty/RaceGirl Chevrolet driven by Eric McClure.
Kertus Davis, son of team owner Johnny Davis, could not drive the car due to his commitment to drive the #77 Dollar General Stores Chevrolet for Kevin and Delana Harvick.
Johnny Davis, a longtime friend of Shepherd, called his old friend Wednesday night and asked him to pilot the second car this weekend.
The car will carry the #01 and will be sponsored by DD&L Motorsports, Davis's company's official name.
“All we are sure of at this point is that Johnny asked Morgan to drive the car for him and Morgan boarded a plane for L.A. at 6 a.m. on Thursday,” team co-owner Dana Tomes said. “I don’t know if it is a backup car to the #0 car or if they are sending a second team, but I know there was reportedly going to be a short field and Johnny wanted to put a second car on.”
